In 1Q 2009, David Van Winkle and Dexter Coolidge of the Northern New Mexico Group of the Sierra Club met with Santa Fe Mayor David Coss, City of Santa Fe City Councilors and Santa Fe County Commissioners to convince them to use renewable energy for the Buckman water project. It became a reality last week.


Chapter Funded Program Wins Sustainable Santa Fe Award

On April 24, Energy Works received the 2010 Sustainable Santa Fe Award for a Renewable Energy Project. Energy Works is collaboration between Youth Works and the Community Housing Trust, which the Rio Grande Chapter of the Sierra Club funded in 2009 in conjunction with the City of Santa Fe and the Santa Fe Community Housing Trust. This project funded eight youths to complete over 225 energy efficiency installations/audits for working class families.

These charts show total energy usage up by approximately 58% since 1982: from 62.9 quadrillion (Quad) Btu, to 99.5 Quad in 2008.

On March 10th, the Coalition for Clean and Affordable Energy (CCAE), led by Western Resource Advocates and the Sierra Club, sent a letter to ENMRD Secretary Jon Goldstein asking the Department not to extend the $27 million dollar renewable energy tax credit for the Estancia Biomass plant, (that would use wood for fuel) run by Western Water and Power Production (WWPP).

Solar Financing via 3rd Parties Signed into Law

Governor Bill Richardson signed into law HB181/SB190 that provide solar financing via 3rd parties. This new law will directly benefit municipalities, schools, and other tax-exempt organizations that want to install solar energy systems.
