by Rochelle Gerratt - Sierra Club International Trip Leader
Rochelle Gerratt is leading a Sierra Club National Outings trip to Copper Canyon, Mexico from November 7 to 19, 2010. Join her in this slide show of the scenic wonders of Copper Canyon in the Sierra Madre.
We begin our trip by taking one of the most spectacular train rides in the world, traveling from 600 feet above sea level to our destination on the 8,000 foot rim. We hike down one of the canyons on a five-day trek with seasoned Mexican/Tarahumara guides assisted by pack burros. From our rustic camp along the Urique River we take a day hike to a hot spring nestled in the forest. During our hike back up to the rim we stop to camp on the outskirts of a Tarahumara village and explore a Mogollon Rim cliff dwelling. We spend the remainder of the trip traveling down another canyon to visit Batopilas, one of North Americas most remote towns, where we hike on the Camino Real far above the Batopilas River.
