Environmental Improvement Board - Clean Air Hearing - Santa Fe

Coal - San Juan

Wednesday, June 1
State Capitol Building, Santa Fe

Please come to these meeting to express your outrage for clean air! The NM Environment Department(NMED) is proposing to weaken the EPA clean air proposal for the coal-fired San Juan Generating Station.

Listen to an interview with David Van Winkle on KSFR, 101.1FM

The coal-fired San Juan Generating Station is currently generating 42 million pounds of nitrous oxide per year. This pollutant causes haze and health problems related to breathing(asthma and heart attacks), per the American Lung Association.

In 2010, the EPA proposed implementation of safeguards that would reduce these pollutants by 80%. Also, in 2010, NMED supported these same safeguards.

However, now NMED is proposing safeguards that would reduce pollution by only 20%. This is clearly a politically motivated change. The Governor's "pro-business" policy is to weaken environmental safeguards in many areas. This policy is not pro-business, it is anti-people!
